Bergamo - Spazi_ARE (Open, Resilient and Educational Spaces)

The ‘Spazi_ARE (Open, Resilient and Educational Spaces)’ initiative is the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy of Bergamo aimed at improving the living conditions of local populations in target areas and redeveloping the spatial structures that characterise the urban landscape.

The final beneficiaries of the initiative are all residents of the target areas (14.874 - updated in 2023 - of whom 7.777 are women). In particular, the activities will reach vulnerable social groups such as young people, minors, the elderly, people with disabilities and people in socio-economic fragility.

The project also aims to strengthen the model based on neighbourhood networks in order to identify, through their involvement, the needs and requirements of the areas concerned, but also to encourage and stimulate the actors in the networks to take the lead in improving the quality of life in the area, in a spirit of shared responsibility.

The implementation of the strategy will be coordinated by an internal steering committee within the municipal administration. A cross-functional group (composed of: education, childhood, technical services, mobility services, green spaces and neighbourhood networks of the municipality) related to municipal services will be responsible for coordinating and guiding the pursuit of the SUDs objectives.

The strategy is based on four strategic drivers with the aim of linking redevelopment interventions aimed at urban quality of structures (meeting places, residential areas, parks, green spaces, sports areas) and interventions in the field of services, relationships and interactions between people and social groups (new urban welfare, social inclusion, socio-cultural activities and new social hubs) in a perspective of integrated development:

  • Driver 1 - To repurpose school buildings, public and open spaces, transforming them into new hubs for social interaction, education, health, and social care services.
  • Driver 2 Redevelop abandoned or disused public/private housing contexts
  • Driver 3 Increase physical and socio-cultural connections, soft mobility, urban greenery and social activities
  • Driver 4 Develop and strengthen actions for inclusion, social innovation and urban resilience
